We pride ourselves on our clean spring-fed water. It is officially tested twice each season and is rated one of the lowest bodies of water in Ohio as far as contaminants. We rarely need to treat the water. The average water depth is 30 ft. If chasing large-mouth bass, blue-gill, crappie and catfish sounds like fun, one can experience a wide variety of wildlife at NLQP.
There is also a variety of individual campsites that cater to personal preference. Whether it's on a ledge by the water or deep in the woods, you can camp near the social activity or settle in one of the quiet, isolated areas. This area was of vital importance to the Native American tribes. The park lies near one of the highest points of the state and is close to the watershed divide between the Ohio River and Lake Erie.
Several major foot trails and canoe routes passed through this vicinity. This area became an important trade center for both pioneers and Native American. The area developed into an important agricultural and dairy center. Cheesemaking was prominent and began nearly as soon as the first settlers arrived. By , northeast Ohio cheese controlled the southern markets. Eventually, canal and rail transportation increased the area's importance. Garfield, 20th President of the United States, was educated.
At the age of 26, he was chosen president of the college. The college was opened in as the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute, received its charter in , and was rebuilt and enlarged in The Nelson-Kennedy region has always been a popular vacation spot and eventually came under state protection. In , the state purchased land at Nelson Ledges, and in , it bought acres of the area known as Kennedy Ledges. The spectacular rock formations at Nelson-Kennedy Ledges have become trademarks of the park.

The white trail starts at the parking lot and goes left, walking across the top of the ledges, when you reach a junction in the trail, go right, this will take you to the waterfall. Red Trail:. Trail Description: This is a very tight trail that isn't for those who are claustrophobic. It takes you through fat mans peril and the squeeze to Devils Icebox, a small cave that the creek runs through.
If you are really looking for an adventure, walk in to the Devils icebox. Notice to the left how you can get out of the cave if you scramble up a bit. This is not easy, but if you are adventurous, this is an extremely fun thing to do. Blue Trail:.
