For those of you who are unfamiliar with the name, the SmokeFire is a pellet grill made by Weber. That said, some Weber products are still manufactured at the facility in Huntley using imported parts. The grill is available in several sizes, from 18 to 26 inches. The Summit line is made up of both charcoal and gas-powered units.
There are a few kamado-style grills in the series as well. As the name suggests, these grills are among the very best that Weber has to offer. The cooking chamber on a Weber Q Series grill has a saucer-shaped design, making it a great conversation starter.
Most of them are portable, but the Q is a full-sized model. The Smokey Joe, the Jumbo Joe, and the Go-Anywhere grill are all portable units , designed to be taken on the road for camping or tailgating expeditions. The Smokey Joe measures 14 inches in diameter and is available in a variety of colors. The Jumbo Joe offers a bit more grilling space at 18 inches, but it has the same squat design as the Smokey. The Go-Anywhere is a tabletop grill with a rectangular shape. Weber offers both gas and charcoal options for this series.
If buying American-made products is important to you, steer clear of the units in these lineups. At grill shows, we have literally seen many imported manufacturers that advertise the ability for anyone to put their name on a grill and call it their own. Companies building grills in the United States are subject to stringent regulations. The frustration of not having access to parts such as grease drip trays, valves, manifolds, knobs, wheels, and body parts. These are just some of the parts you may not be able to replace. When manufacturing is subcontracted, you are relying on the contractor to stay in business and have quality and consistent manufacturing. Case in point: We had a customer with a Bull Built-in Grill and they needed a new manifold. Due to changes in design, this part was no longer available and the grill became worthless.
Manifolds are not universal. They are the pipe that holds the valves and are an important part that is necessary to safely operate a grill. When a part such as a manifold is not available, it renders your gas grill inoperable. At that point, what are the replacement options? Often there is no replacement. Modification of the outdoor kitchen and countertop becomes necessary, creating a huge expense. Many of these grills are considered throwaways.
The buyer will use them a few times maybe for a couple of years and then the grill will break. The brand names on these grills are not the manufacturer. Sometimes there is no way to get in touch with the manufacturer. Unfortunately, this is something that we see on a frequent basis. These imported grills are essentially private labeled.
It can be extremely difficult to get the service or part you need once you walk out of the store. With recent tariffs on imported products, you may not be saving much. Product recalls can become an issue. There are significantly more grill recalls on imported products than those made in the USA. Does this mean all imported grills are bad? Not necessarily. But as mentioned earlier, they are not held to the same standards that American-made grills are held to.
